Contemporary art biennials: platforms for prospective observation
Contemporary Art | Biennials and other major events related to contemporary art are blossoming around the world. Nowadays, they represent an important economic stake, they are both levers of cultural radiation and catalysts for tourism in a given territory. Some are more prestigious than others, particularly those that adopt a prospective dimension. Artistic direction, which is in the hands of the exhibition’s curator, determines the definition of the theme it will explore. Each of these events documents the future of a geocultural area through the artists’ works, seismographers of ideas in transformation.
The Venice Biennale, active since 1895, and the Documenta in Kassel, Germany, created in 1955; are the most influential on account of their power and capacity to anticipate future behaviors. These two events, both of which took place in 2017 in Venice, Athens and Kassel, highlight tendencies of change.
